Like The Flowers Need The Rain

Photographed By Ellinor Forje

It's been raining cats and dogs here where I am, some say it's ruining the summer. But, I for one, am astonied by its mystery.

Don't get me wrong, the rain can be a pain in the you-know-what. But sometimes it's cleansing, too. Soothing. Then, the very thought of raindrops, alone, makes me want to put on a trench coat paired with a floppy hat plus some funky boots à la Camilla Norrbäck, and walk the streets of New York like it were in September. And you know what else? On a day like this, that feeling intensifies. Magnifies.

Yves Saint Laurent

Not visiting Paris in July also means I’ll miss the “La Révolution de la Mode” exhibition at the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent this summer. It ends on July 17, so there’s really no way around it.

To my surprise (and mild dismay), there’s another YSL exhibition running in Morocco as well. And can you guess when it ends? July 17. I feel like the Fashion Gods have conspired against me.

All that said, L’Amour Fou (2010), the documentary about Yves Saint Laurent and the loves of his life, Pierre Bergé and fashion, is well worth watching if you get the chance. It’s profound and beautiful, much like the shoe you see above.

Jungle Love

Photographed By Ellinor Forje

I recently realized that I presently own no clothing - or other items with animal print motifs on them. Correction, I have one zebra patterned textile clutch which I bought from my friend and sometimes designer, Rachel Minka, when she was running a shop on Etsy. She's on hiatus now. But, a photo of my bag is still up on her page for your viewing pleasure. Isn't it adorable? I'm in desperate need of a comeback. Rachel, come back!

Chanel Après Coco

Photographed By Ellinor Forje

The other day, after receiving an invitation to the semi annual Chanel Joaillerie show at 18 Place Vendôme in Paris, I was reminded, rather abruptly, of life’s more unyielding truths. Owing to scheduling conflicts and lingering variant woes, I would be nowhere near la capitale de la France during this season’s haute couture week.

No sooner had that realization settled than it gave way to a gentler consolation, I had yet to watch "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky." And so, naturally, I did what any reasonable person in my position might do. Watch the film?

Hardly.

Instead, I drowned my disappointment in a fresh lacquer. Coco Chanel, all the way.

Besides, I’ve already seen Coco Before Chanel" (2009), starring Audrey Tautou and Benoît Poelvoorde, among others. It’s a finely crafted drama that traces a life of remarkable scale, at once intimate and grand, and stands as a testament to the enduring Chanel legacy. I was particularly taken with the moment the iconic monochrome suit makes its appearance near the end.

But enough, I wouldn’t dream of spoiling it for you.
